Today on Mobile Mixed: I don't know about you but I love knowing I can connect with my customers the way that works best for them now...but I also want to be able to connect with them whichever way is best for them in 5 years from now...Does that mean us business owners need a mobile website, smartphone app or SMS alerts? Today we're diving into hot debate within the web design world about how to address the mobile web: should you create a separate mobile site or a responsive experience instead?  We've talked about why your local business needs a separate site vs responsive site but which approach is the most future friendly? Brad Frost , a mobile web strategist and front-end designer at R/GA joins us today to break down this topic as it relates to our current presidential candidates. Brad recently wrote an article for Smashing Magazine comparing Barack Obama's responsive approach to Mitt Romney's seperate mobile site approach. Brad is a thought leader in this space and speaks all over the world on web design and how it affects mobile. Today we discuss: The 4 key parts to designing a mobile and future friendly experience The biggest challenge designers/developers face when it comes to responsive design  Which approach is right for YOUR business I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Have you created a mobile website yet? If so, are you using responsive? Side note: there were a few audio hiccups so I apologize for that but you can digest almost all of the content. :) If you need a little guide and have to jump around you can use the following break points:  3:07 - Brad's Background and role with R/GA. 9:02 - Brad's article in Smashing Magazine breaking down separate sizes vs responsive. 9:42 - Why he compared the presidential candidates. 11:30 - How Brad breaks down responsive based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs. 12:30 - Is it the design? Craiglist example. 14:25 - Definition of Access. 18:07 - How Brad actually defines "responsive design" ( I know it should have been earlier) 22:09 - The importance of interaction. 25:50 - The never ending scroll navigation. 31:20 - The efficiency of Progressive Disclosure. 32:38 - The importance of performance. 33:42 - The biggest challenge of performance. 37:00 - Ways to Enhance the experience. 42:40 - Which approach is more future friendly? 45:00 - Is it too simple to think based  on different devices or behavior? 49:40 - How should small businesses be thinking about responsive? Do they need it? 53:40 - What should we about responsive ads. 59:00 - Plant the seed for a responsive future with your clients. 1hr 2 mins - Best practice for designers that are not coders and importance of collaboration.  Links Mentioned:  Brad Frosts Website Brad's Smashing Magazine Presidential Post R/GA Brad On Twitter About Brad Frost:  Brad Frost is a mobile web strategist and front-end designer at R/GA and is based out of Pittsburgh, PA. It continues to be one of the most powerful ways a business/brand can add mobile to their marketing mix and get results. There is a reason Coca-Cola allocates approximately 70% of their mobile budget to SMS. As Jeff Hasen (CMO of HipCricket) says in a our past interview, SMS is the workhorse for most businesses. It may not be sexy but it works. Although it's one of the most effective mobile channels available there are still people that are doing it wrong which has resulted in some lawsuits. I recently wrote a guest post on Mobile Marketer about a $47 Million mistake made by Jiffy Lube sending unsolicted SMS messages. Well, what better way to not get sued than talking with lawyers that specialize in this stuff? Today, we're joined by Mike Hazzard and Jason Koslofsky of Arent Fox and they help some big brands play nice with their SMS marketing initiatives. Today Mike and Jason discuss the 3 things you need to do to stay out of trouble when executing an SMS marketing initiative for your business. As Mike says, what you learned in Kindergarden will keep you from getting sued like Jiffy Lube. :) I hope you enjoy today's show and this brings you back to kindergarden for about a second. Today on Mobile Mixed: Ok, when it comes to making passive income online AND being uber transparent about it, there is no better person to talk to than today's guest, Pat Flynn. Pat's blog Smart Passive Income has been a great resource for me as I build Mobile Mixed and he is a constant inspiration for me so I'm obviously super stoked to have him on the show today. Now you may be asking yourself, "Greg, what does Pat do within mobile"? Well, my friends one of Pat's businesses is a smartphone app company called LOL'er apps and they create  (with ourtsourced developers) entertainment apps in hopes of creating passive income. As Pat tells you today, it's been a success thus far and he's working to release some new apps in the near future. Today's show is important for a lot of reasons and I believe you'll walk way with some SERIOUS action items and a little bit o' inspiration. So, today we cover: How Pat's "Be Everywhere" strategy is one that most businesses/brands should strive for Why mobile is an important component for businesses, brands, especially personal brands. How a smartphone app can better connect you with your community How mobile will play a role in promoting Hollywood films, even one like Crooked Arrows which Pat worked on Example: You have a badass community like Pat does who want to consume content while on the go, during a commute or even from their bed like me ( I know, it sounds weird but it's TOTALLY normal). Even better, add push notifications to let your community know when you have a new post, video or podcast. Like Pat is going to add soon! ;) I hope you enjoy today's episode with Pat. What ways do you think you could be using mobile to build better relationships with your customers and better serve your audience? Lemme know in the comments. Jared is one of the savviest mobile marketers in the industry and has been in the mobile space for over a decade building his company. As a pioneer of the mobile health movement he's leveraging mobile to help his clients make a difference. Today, Jared and I talk about the importance of mobile health, how retailers are using mobile to grow their business and the importance of marketing 101. You've heard me say it before but too often those diving into mobile don't look at mobile as a tool to reach specifically defined goals and objectives. They just view it as tool and move forward with no real strategy. It's the biggest mistake you can make and Jared does a great job with his clients assuring they get started while also understanding "why" they should adding mobile to their marketing mix. Today on Mobile Mixed: We got an awesome entrepreneur in Jonathan C. Kay joining us. Not only has Jonathan been known as the "Ambassador of Buzz" but he is also a NY Giants fan, something we both have in common. He's a wise wise man. Jonathan is a super inspiring entrepreneur and and built a reputation for himself while at Grasshopper but now he is going mobile and helping developers sell their apps at Apptopia. Apptopia is a secondary marketplace for the purchase and sales of applications. With over 1 million apps in the marketplace not all apps are going to be the million dollar machines like some of us have seen recently. Today, Jonathan and I discuss: Why a secondary marketplace is needed for applications How some of his customers are making great money selling their apps How businesses looking to dive into applications have an opportunity to save time, money and resources by purchasing existing apps Why its not just about your app but more the strategy and use case for the app that makes a difference If you're looking to to get into app development, are looking to build an app for your business or just want to learn from a smart entrepreneur you'll definitely enjoy the show. Matthias started ShareSqare which started out as a a QR Code platform which allowed you to tie QR code's to experiences like instant wins, downloads, video, generating fans and more. Matthias is an interesting entrepreneur tackling a problem that a lot of businesses have - connecting offline experiences to the online world. You'll notice a theme that mobile is moving fast and it's important to test, validate and improve your strategy as you learn. In today's show we'll talk about: The dirty little secret of paid search for SMB's The performance marketing component of mobile marketing How QR codes are not what you really want The effectiveness of mobile marketing as a lead generation tool I think Matthias sheds some interesting light into the use of mobile in todays marketplace.
